Girls Aloud - 'Sound Of The Underground'

Girls Aloud - Nadine Coyle, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts, Cheryl Tweedy and Kimberley Walsh - are the biggest breath of fresh air to hit the female pop market in the four years since the Spice Girls meant anything to anybody.

From the outside it's enough of a relief to find a girlband with a personality - but Girls Aloud have got five, and each one is bursting to get out. Nicola, like the rest of the girls, is grateful for the launchpad of Popstars: The Rivals. But, like the rest of the girls, Nicola's also waiting impatiently to break out of the character she was given in the show. She's not always the little firecracker who refuses to smile, any more than Sarah is always the confident diva.

Girls Aloud won't beat around the bush, and they won't wait until their second album to show their true colours. They're not stupid; they know fame can go as quickly as it comes, which is why their debut single 'Sound Of The Underground' is the sound of five girls having a laugh in the studio and banging out an unabashed, in-yer-face pop tune. Girls Aloud know when fame comes, you grasp it with both hands - because the five roads leading to the band have taken longer than six months to walk.
